Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appealed to direct talks with Xi Jinping China when he urged Beijing to use his political and economic influence on Russia to help end the war in his country.
Zelenskyy told the South China Morning Post (SCMP) in an interview published on Thursday that he had asked for a conversation with the President of China since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February, but that had not yet happened.
I want to talk directly. I have a conversation with [President] Xi Jinping a year ago, “he told a newspaper based in Hong Kong. “Since the beginning of a large scale aggression on February 24, we have officially asked for conversations, but we [have never] talked to China even though I believe it will help.”
China, the most important ally of Russia, has not condemned what Russian President Vladimir Putin has not been called “Special Military Operation” in Ukraine, which according to him is intended for Denazifying” and demilitarization of the country. The six -month conflict has killed at least 5,327 civilians in Ukraine and forced around 12 million people from their homes. The battle also prevented the seeds from leaving the country, known as the “world bread basket”, worsening lack of food and rising prices for driving around the world.
Zelenskyy and his western allies called the Russian invasion of the aggression war, but Beijing said Moscow was provoked to attack, including because of NATO expansion in Europe
Xi previously expressed concern over the conflict in Ukraine during the Summit in June, said that it sounded alarm for humanity”. However, he did not give an indication of how to end the battle.
Earlier this month, he also spoke to Putin, a leader who was previously called his best friend, and reiterated China’s support for Russia’s “sovereignty and security”. XI said “All parties must encourage the right solution of the Ukraine crisis in a responsible way”, according to government media, and that China will “continue to play its role” for this purpose.
Zelenskyy told SCMP that he understood that China wanted to maintain a “balanced” attitude towards war but emphasized that the conflict began with what he called the Russian invasion of the Ukraine sovereign territory.
Russia is a invader … this is a war in our territory, they come to attack. China, as a big and strong country, can go down and a kind of placing the Russian federation [in] certain places,” said Zelenskyy. “Of course, I am very much Want China to review her attitude towards the Russian federation. “
He also urged China to act on the UN Security Council, where it was one of the five members who held Veto, to maintain international norms.
If we operate without law, then why do we have to have a security council at all, if there are countries … or several countries in the world, easily decide to violate the rules militarily? “He asked.
China has so far been abstained from the votes on the UN Security Council and in the General Assembly that condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Instead he called for a dialogue between the warring parties, while also condemning Western military assistance to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia as detrimental to conflict resolution.
